What design decision will this session inform? Define the person, task, context and uncertainty.
Example: Can a first-time customer find a delivery option and understand its cost before paying?
Record participant criteria, access needs, invitation, consent, recording choice, who can see notes and when notes will be deleted.
Use participant IDs. Ask permission before recording. Do not paste identifying research data into AI tools without authorization.
Describe the situation and goal without naming the button or path you want the person to choose.
Instead of “click Delivery,” try “You need this by Friday. Find out whether that is possible and what it would cost.”
Draft an introduction: We are testing the design, not you. You can pause or stop. Try the task as you normally would.
Ask “What are you thinking?” or “What would you expect next?” Avoid teaching the interface while measuring task completion.
For each participant record task outcome, assistance, errors, exact observation, relevant quote and context. Separate observation from interpretation.
Record “paused at the price for 12 seconds and asked about shipping,” not “hates the checkout.”
Group patterns and contradictions. Name the change, confidence, next check, owner and date.
A small qualitative study can surface issues; it does not establish population-wide prevalence or a conversion lift.
